Community-led Housing and Housing Co-operatives

The final webinar of the series ‘The Transformational Power of Co-operatives’  was on Tuesday the 24th from 12.00 to 14.00. The topic we discussed was housing.

Community- led housing and housing co-operatives are not-for-profit and democratic organisations run for and by their members. This webinar introduced two very interesting organisations working towards the democratisation of housing.

Tony Buckley, Eammon Moloney and John Sinnott from Hope and Homes – a new project looking to construct affordable housing in Galway City. The aim of the project is tackling the problem of homelessness and unemployment. Their mission is to integrate affordable housing with job creation where the target groups are given the opportunity to gain construction skills, which will enable them to develop their full potential and further their future prospects of employment and career advancement. Tony McQuillan and Joanna McMinn from Co-housing Connections, an umbrella organisation for community-led housing projects now working on an urban development in the city of Belfast. They aim to build affordable homes where residents have their own homes, yet also have use of extensive common facilities such as open space, courtyards, a playground and a common house and where residents have one goal in mind: to create and be part of a vibrant, diverse and inter-generational community living in a safe, and mutually supportive environment.
