Northern Mutual and how to join the local community bank campaign

Northern Mutual have a vision for a bank with a difference: a mutual owned by the members and based in NI only. That means Northern Mutual put members first, answering to them and not to profit-driven shareholders.

This local campaign to establish a mutual, regional bank was launched in 2019 and is currently at the development stage. They are actively raising awareness and gathering supporters.

Bridget Meehan, campaigner and Director in the Northern Mutual said: “We believe a mutual bank can be part of the solution to tackling poverty and handling crises like the COVID pandemic and climate change, by retaining our local wealth and investing it in our local communities and economy.”

If you want to keep up-to-date with the campaign, they now have a twitter handle @NorthernMutual. The Northern Mutual is also calling for people who want to get actively involved in the campaign. Being part of the group could mean anything from retweeting us on Twitter to proactively lobbying people and organisations in your local area. How big or how small the contribution is up to every individual and every contribution will be warmly welcomed.

If you’d like to hear more, we’d love to see you at the group’s first meeting, taking place online, on Tuesday 18 January, 5.30pm-6.30pm. Send an email to bridgetmeehan@hotmail.com to get more info.
