Many congratulations to Ethical Weigh Community Benefit Society Ltd as they have completed their transition from a private business to a community owned one. The owners of the shop closed the business during the summer and the community around Eglinton mounted a successful campaign to save it.
The community representatives set up a steering group that, after a careful due diligent process, came to the conclusion that the business could survive and continue to serve the community. With a community business model, members of the community are engaged in the daily running as well as the decision-making processes and they choose to adopt a co-operative form. The first change that the Steering group implemented, after consulting with the wider community, was to create a café within the shop. All built with the help of volunteers, the café has increased meeting space and trading of the popular vegan food prepared by chef Paul. The Steering Group re-opened the shop just before Christmas and completed the legal conversion so they are now a community benefit society.
More volunteers and more community-based activities are now planned for 2023 including a community share offer to complete the buy out. An engagement event held on 20 January 2023 celebrated what has been achieved to date. More information:
