Celebrating Co-operation: Carrick Greengrocers & Jubilee Farm Unite for a Sustainable Future

Date: Thursday the 26th June

Venue: Carrick Greengrocers

Time: 18.30

Carrick Greengrocers and Jubilee Farm recently came together to celebrate ‘co-operation among co-operatives’ for the International Year of Co-operation. The event, held at Carrick Greengrocers, on the 26th June at 18.30,  highlighted the power of community-driven enterprises in fostering sustainability, local food production, and economic resilience.

Jubilee Farm, Northern Ireland’s first community-owned farm, has been a key supplier of fresh, seasonal produce to Carrick Greengrocers. Their partnership ensures that customers receive locally grown vegetables with minimal food miles, reinforcing the shared commitment to climate-friendly farming and ethical food sourcing.

The event featured discussions on the importance of co-operative models, showcasing how collaboration between businesses can strengthen local economies while promoting environmental stewardship. Attendees explored the benefits of shared ownership, democratic decision-making, and sustainable food systems, with insights from farmers, co-operative leaders, and community members.

Tiziana O’Hara emphasized the significance of co-operation:  “By working together, we create a food system that prioritises people, the planet, and local economies. This collaboration between Carrick Greengrocers and Jubilee Farm is a testament to Principle 6 about co-operation among co-operatives and how this support economic and community development”.

As the International Year of Co-operation continues, events like this serve as a reminder that collaboration is key to building resilient communities. Whether through food and farming co-operatives are shaping a future where sustainability and social impact go hand in hand.
