Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-op welcomes support & recognition.
Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-operative welcomes support and recognition for fishing community.
The recently announced DAERA’s £700,000 support scheme for eel fishermen and hauliers affected by recent restrictions provides much‑needed relief to our members and strengthens the Co‑operative’s ability to protect both livelihoods and the long‑term health of the Lough.
As a co‑operative, its strength lies in collective stewardship. For generations, fishermen have worked together to manage the eel fishery responsibly, passing on practical skills and ecological knowledge essential to safeguarding this unique environment. The Co‑operative therefore welcomes DAERA’s confirmation that the Transition Scheme is not a decommissioning scheme, but one designed to retain skills and capacity while conservation measures support the recovery of European eel stocks.
A strong co‑operative sector is an asset for environmental protection: it keeps decision‑making local, ensures fishermen’s knowledge informs management, and aligns economic survival with ecological responsibility. Supporting fishermen and protecting the Lough must continue side by side.
The Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-operative appreciate the recognition given to the members, their families and their communities. The Co‑operative remains committed to working with DAERA and scientific partners to support eel stock recovery and safeguard the traditions and expertise needed to sustain the fishery for future generations.
