Identity Verification: What NI Co‑ops and Societies Need to Know

If you are running a co‑operative or a community benefit society (BenCom) in Northern Ireland, you may have heard about new identity verification rules. The key thing to understand is that the rules depend on where your organisation is registered.

If the co-op is registered with Companies House

Directors and people with significant control must complete identity verification. This is now a legal requirement for all Companies House‑registered bodies, including co‑ops that chose the company structure. You can find more information on the process here.

If you are a co-op society registered with the Financial Conduct Authority

Good news! These rules do not apply, at present. Co‑operative and community benefit societies registered with the FCA follow a different legal framework, and identity verification is not required for officers or directors at present.

How to tell the difference

  • Companies House co-operatives appear on the Companies House register (usually you have a registration number starting with NI)

  • FCA‑registered societies appear on the Mutuals Register and usually have an “IP”‑style registration number, for older registrations, or just a number for new ones.

Why it matters

Understanding which regulator you fall under helps you stay compliant without taking on unnecessary admin. Companies House organisations must act, while FCA‑registered societies continue with their usual reporting requirements at present.
