Planting Seeds for Co-operative Renewal

The recent event Co-operatives as a Policy Tool for Economic and Social Transformation was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the future of co-operative growth across this island. Speakers brought global perspectives and local challenges.
Jerome Nikolai Warren‘s insights into the international co‑operative movement, especially in Italy, highlighted that the issues faced here are shared across borders, reminding us of the strength of learning from others. Ian Adderley emphasised the importance of recognising ‘patterns of needs’, ‘development cycles’, and ‘networks co‑ordination’ when considering how to expand the sector. Prof Mo Moulton’s historical investigation into the social impact of agri‑coops demonstrated the contemporary relevance of past experiences: we still need those communal and safe spaces that co-ops can provide! While also stressing the role of an enabling policy environment and the influence of government decisions. Stewart Dickson’s work on defining social value in legislation pointed to the significant impact such clarity could have on future developments. Taken together, these contributions reinforced that the challenges of growing the co‑operative sector are many but not insurmountable. Giulia ní Dhulchaointigh, from the Department for the Economy, reaffirmed a strong commitment to the social economy, reminding us that economic growth cannot be separated from the pursuit of better social outcomes. With this vision, as Giulia suggested, we can plant the seed today, ensuring that future generations will enjoy its benefits. And finally, a special thank you to Patrick Doyle, the co-organiser of the event, the Department for the Economy NI, and The National Lottery Community Fund Northern Ireland for their support. hashtagIYC2025.
