Co-operative Alternatives

Your co-operative journey starts here.

Welcome to Co-operative Alternatives, Northern Ireland's leading co-operative development agency. Across the island of Ireland, we help groups like yours build businesses that are fair, democratic, and owned by the people who need them.

Co-operative principles

Co-operatives around the world operate according to seven core principles. At Co-operative Alternatives, we apply these not as abstract ideals, but as everyday practices that shape how we work, relate, and grow together.

Voluntary Membership

We welcome co‑operatives of all sizes and sectors, ensuring participation is inclusive and accessible—especially for underrepresented groups and emerging initiatives.

Democratic Control

Our governance is shaped by our members' voices. Decisions are made collectively, with equal say for all, and we remain accountable to the wider co‑operative community.

Economic Participation

We support members to pool resources, share risks, and build collective financial resilience. Surpluses are reinvested to strengthen the sector and support new ventures.

Autonomy and Independence

While we collaborate with our allies, our direction is always determined by members. We safeguard the integrity and independence of the co‑operative model.

Education and Training

We provide tailored learning—from peer exchanges to policy briefings—equipping members to lead, advocate, and innovate within their communities.

Cooperation among Co-operatives

We foster solidarity through shared campaigns and joint projects. Our consortium model is itself a living example of co‑operation in action.

Concern for Community

Every initiative we support is rooted in place. We champion co‑ops that advance social justice, environmental sustainability, and local wellbeing.

Connect & Grow
